Open Source in our Current Environment
Open source software (OSS) is everywhere and, given its potential benefits, it’s not difficult to see why. However, in Australia today the pervasiveness of OSS and the business challenges that accompany using OSS are not well known or understood.
Using OSS can reduce costs, enhance IT flexibility, accelerate innovation and decrease the time to solution/deployment. Even industries outside the traditional software and technology sectors, such as financial services, automotive, energy and media, are turning to OSS to be more efficient and ultimately, to keep up with competitors in areas such as mobility and application development. But the use of OSS is not without obligations (i.e. licence terms) or potential consequences for failure to comply with those obligations.
With increasing competition and decreasing resources, developers and development organizations look to open source to keep pace. As OSS use increases, so do challenges to manage, control and ensure compliance with accompanying licences. Additional challenges arise when organizations lack formal policies to regulate OSS use or fail to understand and manage the legal obligations, security vulnerabilities and operational risks arising from such use.
