Hi everyone,
A further perspective....l think Zack’s statements are related more to the IT context than OT Production System context. Validated research by University of South Australia indicates that open data communication protocols/standards enabling connection of the environments are a key influencing factor for integrating OT and IT environments.
Facilitating seamless, automated information flow from asset to office and the resulting asset performance, remote control versus travel particularly to remote regions and timely maintenence decision making provide for tangible cost valuation drivers.
Regards,
Ana

I tackled "The Open Source dilemma" at the recent QGIS conference here in Sydney, Australia. Hopefully it might have some slides which others might be able to use:
Looked at through the lens of traditional management, Open Source collaboration is time consuming, imprecise, unreliable, hard to manage, rarely addresses short term objectives, and hard to quantify in a business case. And yet, in a digital economy, collaborative communities regularly out-innovate and out-compete closed or centrally controlled initiatives.
